In July of 2008, the Brampton Acro Ropers (BAR) sent 10 athletes to Cape Town, South Africa to represent Brampton and Canada in the World Rope Skipping Championships. In a preliminary tournament, the South African International (SAI), Erika Wolter won gold for our country in Power with 134 triple unders and finished 8th overall. Other athletes competing in the SAI included Kathleen O'Callaghan (16th overall), Brittany Yard (13th overall) and Amy Chiappetta (7th overall).
The World Championships had 2 BAR groups competing in team events and 5 BAR athletes competing in the individual (master) events. The three top teams and the five top individual athletes from 19 different countries competed for the title of "World Champion".
In team events, the team of Matt Delorey, Amy Chiappetta, Brittany Yard and Kathleen O'Callaghan had 9th place finishes in Single Rope Pairs Freestyle and Double Dutch Speed and placed 13th overall in the Senior Mixed Team events. The team of Jaclyn Santamaria, Erika Wolter, Samantha Santamaria, Brittany Gillies and Shelby Toews had a 4th place finish in Single Rope Speed and placed 12th overall in the Junior Female Team Events.
In Master (individual events), Matt Delorey placed 23rd in freestyle and finished 31st overall. Jaclyn Santamaria placed 18th in power and finished 27th overall. Olivia Bruce placed 14th in power and finished 26th overall. Shelby Toews placed 4th in power and finished 20th overall. Brittany Gillies placed 15th in freestyle and finished 13th overall. Brampton is quite proud to be able to boast that 4 of our female athletes are in the top 27 in the entire rope skipping world!
